Unpack Common Core State Standards for Math and Achieve Success in CAASPP

Attention: Awesome parents of children in Grade 3, 4 and 5

How to get your children ready for CAASPP in 6 weeks?

They can master Math under Common Core State Standards

The CAASPP test is coming this April and May.

Are you ready to jump in and help out?

But where do you start? Wait, what does CAASPP even mean exactly?

2014-2015 Orange County CAASPP ELA result

It is OK if you don’t know much about it because the assessment is relatively new. CAASPP stands for California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress. In fact, this is just the second year the assessment will be done for all students in Grade 3-8 and Grade 11 in California. Last year, 44% of all California students met or exceeded standards in ELA and 33% of them in Math. If you look into our own school districts, Orange Unified School District (OUSD) was 55% proficient in ELA and 38% in Math. And Placentia Yorba Linda School District (PYLSD) was 63% in ELA and 55% in Math. What does the result tell us? Large percentages of students are not yet performing at a level that suggests they are on track to college and career readiness. There is plenty of room to grow.

Let's face it. Common Core is challenging. Teachers at public schools are working hard to make shifts from the previous California standards to Common Core State Standards. Everyone needs to go through that transformation. Extra help is absolutely necessary. And we will like to be that extra help. We can unpack the common core state standards and help your child achieve success in CAASPP. And it takes less than 6 weeks to get started.

Imagine what it would be like to get the CAASPP report card this Fall. Regardless of the results, you will be a lot more confident that you have put in effort and made difference in your child's education.

This short course will:

  • Focus on 4 claims and performance tasks of the CAASPP assessment
  • Review key common core state standards along with practices
  • Demonstrate CAASPP test items
  • Conduct CAASPP practice test

Common Core State Standards Domain

  • Operations and Algebraic Thinking
  • Number and Operations in Base Ten
  • Number and Operations - Fractions
  • Measurement and Data
  • Geometry

Key Standards Review and Practice

  • Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.
  • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.
  • Develop understanding of fractions as numbers.
  • And more...

CAASPP Review and Practice

  • Claim 1: Concepts & Procedures
  • Claim 2: Problem Solving
  • Claim 3: Communicating Reasoning
  •  Claim 4: Modeling/Data Analysis
  • Performance Task

Some practice tests we will be using throughout the course:

  • MARS performance tasks (MARS: Mathematics Assessment Resource Service) - formative assessment lessons and performance tasks to support Common Core State Standards and mathematical practices in particular.
  • Problems of the Month - math problems divided into five levels of difficulty, allowing scaffolding and deeper mathematical complexity. (Developed by the Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative).

This short course will be available on weekends.

It starts on March 5th and ends in early April before CAASPP test starts.

The first session will start in

  • Weekend Schedule

For added bonus, the first 10 people to join will receive $25 credits you can use in future classes and one month free of one enrichment class (Kung Fu, Public Speaking, Fine Art, or Chinese, up to $85 value).

A word of caution, tutors who are not frontline teaching common core and CAASPP, are not qualified to provide guidance for CAASPP or Common Core teaching methods. Our instructors focus on deep conceptual understanding, procedure fluency, problem solving in real world application, and sound reasoning.
